If you are considering or feeling apprehensive about getting a brazilian wax, this article is for you! This was inspired by a very sweet client of mine who shared with me that she psyched herself out of coming in for over a year and a half! During that time, she made two appointments and canceled them both because she just didn’t know what to expect. The unknown can be a freaky thing. So here is how it goes down, from start to finish.
Booking the appointment
Before you set your appointment, here are a few pro tips! Try to find a word of mouth referral. The best services I have had have been recommended by friends with similar tastes as me. Every company and esthetician is different and has their own style of doing things, so referrals are key! You can also check the reviews of the establishment. When looking at the reviews, check the quality of them. Are they all written by happy customers who can’t wait to tell you about the business? Or are they repetitive and boring? Try and get the overall impression of the business from the reviews. This is especially important if you found the business off of Groupon or another third party. Happy clients feel compelled to leave great reviews!
If the reason you are booking is for a special event like a wedding, pool party or a vacation, be sure and book the appointment a couple of days prior. It’s advised that you wait 24 hours before you engage in the four S’s: Swimming, saunas, sweating and sex. This is to avoid any potential infection and to give your skin a day or two to heal.
Preparation & Nerves
Now that you are locked in to your appointment - maybe you are getting nervous…That’s okay! Nerves are normal. Khloe Kardashian said that when you feel nervous, that’s when you know that you are about to do something EPIC. Nothing fun happens in your comfort zone anyways! 3 days before, we recommend you exfoliate. Get a good sugar or salt scrub or take out your exfoliating mitts and get to scrubbing. Small circles are best. But remember, we want to scrub the top layer of the skin off, not the top three layers of skin off so be thorough but gentle. Follow with a good moisturizer that night and then don’t do anything more until your appointment. This means don’t trim! The more hair the better. The hair needs to be at least the length of a grain of rice so we generally recommend 2 or more weeks of hair growth. If it has been more like 2 or more years of hair growth, we will trim prior to the service.
The day of your appointment
Listen, We have seen it all. If you get your period, that’s no big deal! Just know that we genuinely don’t care. However, your comfort is the most important thing so if you are not comfortable, reschedule your appointment. Shower before. Wear loose fitting clothing, a dress is perfect. The ideal outfit is a dress, skirt or loose pants, cotton underwear, and shoes that are easy to slip on and off. These of course are just suggestions. Any attire is fine and we don’t discriminate! Again, make sure that you are feeling comfortable. After you have ensured that you have completed any paperwork necessary and read through the company’s waivers, head to your appointment! Call your best friend. Breathe.
Your appointment
Arrive 5 minutes before and then come on in! The esthetician’s job is to make you feel safe and comfortable. The esthetician will have their own style but you will most likely start laying on the table in butterfly. If you have any injuries or concerns, there are other body position options as well. The appointment will last between 15 and 30 minutes. Remember, “brazilian” means everything goes from back to front! If you want something else or anything to be left behind, be sure and specify prior to the start of the service.
Last minute thoughts
If you’re feeling nervous, know you are not alone. Girls come into my room every day PETRIFIED. And I get it, your first time with anything can be scary! We are professionals and we do this all day long, so please don’t feel embarrassed or nervous. The hardest part is showing up. If you want, you can take an ibuprofen 30 minutes before (check with your doctor) but it’s not necessary. I tell all my clients, it’s literally 20 minutes of your life and you are going to be so obsessed and addicted to the result. Your hair doesn’t grow back nearly as thick and you won’t even see any hair for up to a few weeks. Your skin will be so soft and smooth. The most common feedback I hear right after is “Wow that wasn’t nearly as bad as I thought it was going to be!”
