Ahh, the leaves change and we are once again reminded that another year is flying by. For me, the crisp air reminds me to avoid Hobby Lobby and Costco because I might have a mental breakdown if I see a Christmas decoration.
And us Las Vegas locals live for this time of the year. Talk to anyone in June - they’ll say something along the lines of “I know it’s hot now but just wait until October or November, you’re going to love it!”
But spooky season and shorter days should not only inspire you to watch Hocus Pocus while baking pumpkin pie…Fall is one of my favorite seasons because it reinvigorates my skincare routine - prepping for skin-peeling season in the winter and engaging in intensive skin repair!
Now is the time to make a few skincare swaps, and let me tell you why!
An ounce of prevention is worth more than a pound of repair! And skincare should be changed throughout the year to tailor to your skin’s current needs. Things like the weather and lifestyle will affect the health of your skin. Generally speaking, during the summer, our skin is assaulted by more sunlight. Activities in the summer usually include staying up later or being out at the beach all day, in and out of the salty ocean. And even though we did our best to protect our skin by staying out of the sun and wearing sunscreen, we are only human. Tending to your skin every fall is a valuable anti-aging practice that will contribute to younger-looking skin without years of buildup to deal with down the line.
Here are some tips to incorporate into your fall routine that your skin will thank you for:
Exfoliation is the number one key to keeping your skin fresh and young. Begin to prep your face for a winter peel by gradually increasing the strength of exfoliation that you are using.
Opt for mock neck or turtleneck as much as you can - I like to let my clothes do the work for me and since mock necks are in style, pull those babies out and allow them to protect your decollate from any further damage.
Swap ice water for warm tea - green tea, spices and herbs contain antioxidants that are great for the skin and will help you snuggle into the cozy crisp weather of the season.
Go in for a facial - every season you can renew your skin by getting it professionally treated, complete with a full cleaning and extractions. Just like going to the dentist, you cannot skip this crucial step. Being in contact with a professional will give you better guidance on how to swap products specifically for your skin type.
See a dermatologist - this is especially important if you have had a lot of sun exposure during the summer. Getting checked at least once a year for abnormal and cancerous cells will keep you on top of developing any chronic issues.
DO NOT change your sunscreen routine. Just because it isn’t as warm outside doesn’t mean you don’t need protection from the sun. Daily sunscreen is a must in every season, especially if it’s cloudy outside.
Switch your moisturizer - usually, our skin needs a little more TLC with the increase in exfoliation and decrease in weather temperature, so opting for a heavier moisturizer will help reduce irritation.
Embracing the changing seasons of the year is easy when you can get excited about it! I love pulling out my pumpkin spice candles as much as the next girl, but nothing excites me more than changing up my skincare routine. It always pays off later by reducing the costs of intense repair treatments you may have to undergo if you let your skin damage go for months or years down the line.
